Candida Overgrowth

Why Your Gut Health Is Making You Sick?

Why this "harmless" yeast might be the root cause of your mysterious symptoms

Right, let's talk about candida. And I don't mean the basic advice you see everywhere, 'just take some probiotics, avoid sugar for a few weeks, and it'll magically clear up.' Or the obvious stuff like oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections that doctors recognise.

Nooooooooo,

I mean the real deal, how candida overgrowth can absolutely wreck your entire system, and your life, why most people completely miss it, and what works to get rid of it. Or certainly how to work towards getting rid of it. Because believe me, it is not easy and it won't go away by itself either.

When My Body Stopped Pretending Everything Was Fine

Let me tell you about the summer of 2024, when I learned firsthand just how brutal systemic candida can be.

I'd spent the last few years living on stress. Studying nutritional therapy whilst running my hair salon, trying to be a good mum, and keeping myself healthy after my health scare in 2019, which in itself was bad enough. It isn't easy doing all of it, I'll tell you.

I finished my nutritional therapy studies on May 16th 2024. I handed my last essay in around 5 am or something stupid o'clock. I'd been doing all-nighters for months on end. Kept on working to try and keep the cash flowing and also trying to home educate my daughter... seriously, even when I type that I think WTF!! How did I manage it all.

When I stopped, I realised I'd put weight back on (well I knew before that but I was trying to ignore it, as you do) and I felt shite, because I'd worked so hard to lose it and get fitter, I felt like a bit of a failure to be honest. So I promptly got back into strict keto. Was doing well but went on holiday about a month later. Still following keto but I drank too much alcohol...

Unbeknown to me, I had severe candida overgrowth brewing. Most likely had been slowly overgrowing for decades. And then I gave it the perfect storm!

The mixture of chronic stress, burning the candle at both ends, strict Keto and then the alcohol was the perfect storm. It set off systemic candidiasis and I was literally covered from head to toe in angry, inflamed skin.

It took me 3 months to recover. I had to go completely carnivore because I couldn't even tolerate eating a bit of broccoli without it flaring again.

“You have been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved.

The Wake-Up Call I Didn't See Coming

Here's what shocked me most: I'm a nutritional therapist. I know all about candida. I teach about it. I work with clients who have it.

But I completely missed it in myself until it became systemic. And I now realise through a shit ton of research and trial and error, it was and is probably the root cause of my psoriasis too.

That's how sneaky candida overgrowth can be. It builds up quietly in the background whilst you're dealing with "life," and then one day your body just says "nope, we're done pretending everything's fine."

My Working Theory

From everything I’ve lived through and everything I’ve read, I believe candida and gut dysfunction could be the root cause of many so-called chronic diseases, not just a side effect of them. Conventional medicine often frames it the other way round: autoimmune conditions, thyroid disease, and diabetes make you “more prone” to candida (which is true). But what if the opposite could also be true?

What if years of candida toxins, biofilms, nutrient theft, and gut damage create the perfect storm that drives autoimmunity, hormone chaos, and metabolic disease? That’s what my own body has shown me time and again. I know this isn’t the neat explanation you’ll find in textbooks, but lived experience matters. This is my working hypothesis, and emerging research on Candida biofilms, histamine release, and joint inflammation is starting to catch up. I will write more about this soon as my research and personal experience develop.

What Candida Actually Is (And Why It Matters)

Candida is a type of yeast that lives naturally in your gut. When everything's balanced, it's not a problem. But when it gets out of balance, hello, years of stress, antibiotics, sugar, high-carb diet, alcohol, and burning yourself out, it can take over and cause absolute chaos.

The Research They Don't Share

What many people don't know: candida doesn't just sit there quietly when it overgrows. It actively produces toxins and disrupts your entire system.

Candida produces dozens of toxic byproducts (over 70 have been identified in research), including acetaldehyde, which multiple studies have linked to carcinogenic and neurological effects. The same compound that creates that "hangover" feeling. You know, that wired but tired, brain fog, can't-think-straight feeling that becomes your new normal.

And remember what I said about alcohol being a trigger? With candida overgrowth, you're already making alcohol inside your own body. So when you drink on top of that, you're not just adding fuel to the fire, you get intoxicated faster, and you're effectively doubling down on the poison your system is already struggling to clear.

But it gets worse. Candida also produces histamine directly as part of its metabolism. So you literally have histamine factories growing in your gut, creating reactions to foods you've eaten your whole life.

The Connection to Autoimmune and Hormones

This is where it gets really interesting. Candida overgrowth doesn't just affect your gut, it can trigger autoimmune responses and completely mess with your hormones.

The constant inflammation from candida can confuse your immune system, making it start attacking your own tissues. And for women especially, the hormonal disruption can be massive, affecting everything from your cycle to your mood to your skin.

The Symptoms Nobody Connects

The symptoms seem completely unrelated, which is why a lot of mainstream treatment for these issues miss it:

  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating - that thick, can't-think feeling
  • Skin issues - eczema, psoriasis, rashes that won't clear (like what happened to me)
  • Joint pain and inflammation - Candida can drive inflammation that shows up in the joints, especially if there’s already damage or autoimmune activity.
  • Sugar and carb cravings you can't control - the candida is literally demanding to be fed
  • Fatigue that sleep doesn't fix - you wake up exhausted
  • Mood swings and anxiety - especially when hungry or stressed
  • Recurring yeast infections or thrush - the obvious ones most people know about
  • Food sensitivities that seem to multiply - suddenly reacting to everything
  • Digestive chaos - bloating, gas, alternating constipation and loose stools
  • Weight loss resistance - doing everything "right" but the scale won't budge
  • Histamine reactions - reacting to "healthy" foods like fermented vegetables

Sound familiar?

The Location Clues

Candida-related skin issues have distinct patterns. If you're getting eczema, rashes, or irritation around your mouth, eyes, or in skin folds (under breasts, groin, armpits), that's classic candida territory.

In my case, it was literally everywhere. Head to toe. But it started in those classic candida spots before spreading.

Why Candida Creates "Mystery" Health Issues

Here's why candida is so bloody hard to diagnose and treat:

It's Systemic, Not Local

Most people think candida = yeast infection. Wrong. When candida overgrows in your gut, it affects your entire body through multiple mechanisms:

Hormonal disruption - affecting everything from sleep to mood to skin

Direct histamine production - creating food reactions and inflammation

Gut barrier damage - leading to leaky gut and systemic inflammation

Nutrient depletion - stealing vitamins and minerals your body needs

Immune system confusion - chronic inflammation keeps everything on high alert

Liver burden - all those toxins have to be processed somewhere

The Cascade Effect

By the time you're dealing with systemic candida, multiple systems are compromised:

  • Stomach acid has declined (can't digest proteins/fats properly)
  • Pancreatic enzymes are insufficient
  • Gallbladder function is sluggish
  • Liver detox pathways are overwhelmed
  • Kidney elimination is struggling
  • Immune system is confused and hyperactive

The whole body is basically falling apart, but it happens gradually so you adapt and think it's "normal."

Why Conventional Treatment Often Misses It

The medical system treats symptoms in isolation. Dermatologist for skin, rheumatologist for joint pain, gastroenterologist for gut issues.

But candida is a whole-body problem that shows up in seemingly unrelated ways. Most practitioners aren't trained to see the underlying pattern that connects everything.

Most conventional medicine only recognises local yeast infections. The idea that gut candida can trigger systemic symptoms isn’t widely accepted in mainstream practice, even though patients clearly live it.. They'll treat obvious thrush or yeast infections, but the idea that candida in your gut could be causing skin problems, joint pain, and brain fog tends to be overlooked.

The Perfect Storm: How Candida Takes Over

Candida overgrowth doesn't happen overnight. It's usually the result of a perfect storm of factors, exactly like what happened to me:

The Setup

  • Chronic stress - suppresses immune function and feeds candida (I was living on stress for years)
  • Burning out your adrenals - compromises your body's ability to fight overgrowth
  • Poor sleep and overwork - weakens your entire system
  • Antibiotics - wipe out beneficial bacteria that keep candida in check
  • High sugar/refined carb diet - candida's favourite food
  • Alcohol - feeds candida and damages gut lining (my holiday drinking was the final straw)
  • Birth control pills - alter hormone balance and gut environment
  • Acid-blocking medications - reduce stomach acid needed for proper digestion, think Omeprazole or Lansoprazole

The Tipping Point

Once candida gets established, it creates the perfect environment for itself to thrive:

  1. Damages gut lining - creating leaky gut
  2. Produces biofilms - protective barriers that shield it from your immune system
  3. Alters gut pH - making the environment more favourable for its growth
  4. Suppresses beneficial bacteria - reducing competition
  5. Creates sugar cravings - ensuring a steady food supply
  6. Produces toxins - keeping your immune system distracted and overwhelmed

This is why it's so persistent and why surface-level treatments don't work.

The Stress Factor

Here's something crucial: stress can trigger candida regrowth faster than anything else. I learned this the hard way.

Even after I recovered from my 2024 episode, by January 2025 I was living on the edge again. Working 24/7, eating ok but not the way I should for what I was dealing with internally.

Stress doesn't just feed candida, it actively suppresses the immune responses needed to keep it in check.

Why Most Candida Protocols Fail

I see this all the time, people try candida cleanses or protocols and either see no improvement or actually feel worse. Here's why:

They Jump Straight to "Kill Phase"

Most protocols start with aggressive antifungals and antimicrobials without preparing the body. This is like trying to demolish a building without clearing the debris; you just create a bigger mess.

When I was dealing with systemic candida, I jumped straight into aggressive antifungals, antimicrobials, and some other supplements, thinking I was doing the right thing, but without supporting my detox pathways first, I was in serious trouble. I should have been hospitalised, I was so bad. But I was a bit daft and was determined to get through it and learn from it. I absolutely would not recommend this to anyone. And to be honest, if you ever realised you had systemic candida die off, I'd recommend going straight to the hospital.

I made myself a million times worse and had to step right back from everything and that is when I began carnivore. With no other supplements except some special targeted enzymes, vitamin C and antioxidants to support my liver.

Biofilms - What are they? And why is it important to know about them?

Candida doesn't just float around freely in your gut. It creates protective biofilm structures, think of them as "wee men with pitchforks hiding in a jelly-like coating."

These biofilms are protective layers Candida uses to shield itself, which is why surface-level antifungals and taking antimicrobial herbs and treatment often fail, as without breaking down the biofilms, we cannot directly affect the Candida bacteria

They Don't Support Detox Pathways

When you start killing candida, it releases toxins. If your liver, lymphatic system, and kidneys aren't functioning optimally, you'll feel worse instead of better.

They're Not Strict Enough with Diet

Here's the uncomfortable truth: if you're not willing to completely eliminate all sugars, fruits, grains, and alcohol, don't bother with antifungal protocols.

When I was recovering, I had to go completely carnivore. I couldn't even tolerate a bit of broccoli without my skin flaring again. That's how strict it sometimes needs to be.

Trying to kill candida while still feeding it is not just ineffective - it can trigger severe reactions.

What Works (And Why You Need Individual Support)

After going through systemic candida myself and working with countless clients, here's what I've learned: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to candida.

Everyone is different. What worked for me might make you worse. What helps one client might trigger autoimmune reactions in another. This is exactly why I nearly ended up in hospital - I thought I knew what I was doing and went too aggressive too fast.

The Foundation Principles

Support before you attack: Your detox pathways need to be working before you start killing anything. Think liver support, lymphatic drainage, proper elimination.

Biofilm disruption matters: Those protective barriers need to be addressed, but timing and dosage are crucial.

Diet is non-negotiable: You can't kill candida whilst feeding it. But how strict you need to be varies enormously between people.

Stress management isn't optional: This is often the missing piece that makes or breaks recovery.

Why Professional Support Matters

Here's what I wish someone had told me: this isn't DIY territory, especially for severe cases.

The interactions between candida protocols and:

  • Existing autoimmune conditions
  • Medications you're taking
  • Other health issues you're dealing with
  • Your individual detox capacity
  • Your stress levels and life circumstances

...are incredibly complex. What seems like a simple protocol can trigger serious reactions if not tailored to your specific situation.

Some Tools That Can Help

I'm not going to give you a step-by-step protocol because that would be irresponsible. But here are some general supportive measures that many people find helpful:

For detox support:

  • Vitamin C for immune and liver support
  • NAC for liver function
  • Proper hydration and mineral balance
  • Gentle movement to support lymphatic drainage

For biofilm disruption:

  • Certain enzymes can be helpful (but timing matters)
  • Some people benefit from specific compounds like NAC or berberine

For dietary support:

  • Removing obvious sugar sources
  • Supporting digestion with appropriate enzymes
  • Focusing on nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods

But the specifics - the dosages, the timing, the combinations - need to be tailored to YOU.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Timelines

Let me be absolutely clear about this: candida protocols are not 30-day cleanses.

It took me 3 months to recover from my systemic episode, and that was with aggressive intervention and perfect compliance.

Reality Check

  • Mild overgrowth: 3-6 months
  • Moderate overgrowth: 6-12 months
  • Severe/systemic candida: 12+ months

And here's the really uncomfortable part - for many people, this becomes about long-term management rather than a permanent "cure."

Why Maintenance Matters

Even after I recovered in 2024, I lost my way around Christmas. By January 2025 I was dealing with it all again - not as severely, but the patterns were returning because I'd fallen back into old stress patterns.

Stress can trigger candida regrowth faster than anything else. This is why nervous system support and stress management aren't optional extras - they're essential components of any candida protocol.

The Autoimmune and Hormonal Connection

Here's something most people don't understand: candida overgrowth can trigger autoimmune responses and completely disrupt your hormones.

The Autoimmune Link

Chronic candida overgrowth creates molecular mimicry, where the immune system gets confused and starts attacking your own tissues because they look similar to candida proteins. Your whole body simply gets overwhelmed by trying to create balance and healing; it cannot keep up.

This is why people with candida often develop:

  • Autoimmune skin conditions (like my psoriasis)
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Food sensitivities that multiply

The Hormonal Chaos

Candida disrupts hormones through multiple pathways:

  • Direct interference with hormone production
  • Liver burden affecting hormone metabolism
  • Inflammation disrupting hormone signaling
  • Stress response affecting adrenal function

For women especially, this can mean irregular cycles, mood swings, weight gain, and skin issues that won't respond to conventional treatments.

Clinical Red Flags: When to Suspect Candida

If you're reading this thinking "that sounds exactly like me," here are the key patterns to watch for:

  • Reactions to most foods, especially healthy ones - fruit and vegetables making you feel worse
  • Reactions to fermented foods - kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir causing problems
  • Inability to tolerate probiotics initially - they make you feel terrible
  • The classic triad: skin issues + digestive problems + brain fog/fatigue
  • Feeling like you can't digest meat or fats properly - your whole digestive system is compromised
  • Weight loss resistance despite doing everything "right"
  • Autoimmune symptoms that came out of nowhere
  • Hormonal chaos that doesn't respond to typical treatments

The Stress Connection

One of the biggest red flags is this pattern: periods of high stress followed by mysterious health issues that doctors can't explain.

That was exactly my story - years of chronic stress leading up to a perfect storm that triggered systemic candida.

When to Get Professional Support

Look, I'm not going to pretend this is easy to do on your own. I'm a nutritional therapist with years of experience, and I still needed support getting through my own candida episode.

You should work with someone experienced if:

  • You have multiple health conditions
  • You're on medications
  • You've tried protocols before and felt worse
  • You have severe systemic symptoms
  • You need support navigating the die-off process
  • You have autoimmune conditions that might be connected

Never proceed with aggressive antifungal strategies if:

  • You're unable or unwilling to follow the dietary protocol strictly
  • Your detox pathways aren't supported
  • You're in a high-stress state without support systems

This stuff can be dangerous if not done properly.

The Bottom Line

Candida overgrowth is real, it's more common than most people think, and it can absolutely wreck your health in ways that seem completely unrelated.

Going through systemic candida myself taught me that this isn't just about gut health, it's about whole-body health. Your immune system, your hormones, your skin, your energy, your mood - it all connects.

The key is understanding that this is usually the result of years of accumulated stress and lifestyle factors. It's not something you can fix with a quick cleanse.

But here's the good news: it's treatable. It takes time, it takes commitment, and it's not always pleasant. But people can and do recover.

If you're dealing with mysterious symptoms that no one can explain, candida overgrowth might be worth investigating. Your body is trying to tell you something important - the question is whether you're ready to listen.

I have developed more of my own protocols this year, especially the last few months. I've been deep diving into old research from the 1920's onwards and been trialling some things out myself, I'll be writing more of this in a blog series soon.
