Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

by Linda McClure | Sep 21, 2025 | Life Blog, Business Blog

It's not your tech. It's not your offer. It's fear.

As I was sitting in my garden in Scotland with a coffee, staring at my phone. On the screen is a website, my website, with two buttons that need changing. From "Join the Waitlist" to "Buy Now."

That's it. That's literally all I have to do to launch the part of my business I have been working on for years. Two button changes. Maybe five minutes of work.

So why does it feel like I'm standing on the edge of a cliff, staring at a classic case of imposter syndrome in action?

I should be delighted, but I do not feel like that at all, so I decided to do what I love most and write about it all. Hopefully it might help someone out there who sits there when all the work behind the scenes is done and it is just a matter of being visible now.

Ten Hours of Tech Hell

Let me back up. Three days ago, I spent over ten hours in what I can only describe as hand-to-hand combat with a piece of technology that seemed designed by people who hate other people.

Ten. Bloody. Hours. It was probably more like 13 or 14 hours but who's counting!

It was supposed to be simple, set up an automated email sequence, get the payments working properly and everything flowing smoothly together. But the system kept throwing cryptic error messages, documentation that contradicted itself, and triggers that worked until they didn't. I was troubleshooting past midnight, my shoulders screaming, my brain fried, ready to throw my laptop out the window and become a goat farmer instead.

Then, finally, at some ungodly hour, I found it. One tiny setting that had been there all along. The real setup had been in place from the minute I'd done it originally.

Victory!!

I should have felt like a conquering hero. Instead, I woke up the next day feeling like I'd been hit by a truck. Not just physically tired, emotionally flattened. Fed up in a way I couldn't explain.

And even though it's all sorted, I still haven't added that BUY NOW button. WTF????

What's Really Terrifying Me

It's taken me a few hours this morning of sitting with that fed-up feeling to realise what was actually happening. The adrenaline crash from the technical marathon was real, but it wasn't the whole story.

I was scared.

I'm still scared.

But not about the tech. I can troubleshoot systems in my sleep. I've been building websites, creating email sequences, and solving digital puzzles for years, first out of desperation when I was too sick and broke to hire anyone, then because I discovered I was actually really good at it.

The fear isn't about doing the work. It's about finally claiming I'm an expert at it.

Thirty Years of Running Things

I started as a hairdresser in Scotland over 36 years ago, the foundation of reading people, understanding what they needed before they could articulate it, creating something beautiful while they told me their stories. But that was just the beginning.

I've been running businesses for around 26 years now. 20 years ago I became a self-employed hairdresser when I returned to Scotland after living overseas for almost 11 years in different places. Then I ran a stress management charity. Managed a Regis Hair salon with around 15 staff. Had my own salon for 6 years. Taught at college.

I've always been the person solving problems, organising things, making systems work. Whether it was staff schedules, inventory management, client databases, or marketing and outreach work, I was good at making businesses run smoothly.

Then life nearly killed me at 47. While I was learning to decode my own health crisis, I was also accidentally becoming an expert at decoding digital business systems. Because when you're desperately ill and broke, you can't afford agencies or web designers. You learn to build your own websites at 2am because your survival depends on it.

I thought this was just survival. Turns out, it was my apprenticeship.

“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.” - Abraham Maslow

My Accidental Apprenticeship

For years, I've been the person other business owners quietly come to when their tech is broken, or they just do not understand it. When they need to just talk it out, their business ideas or their strategies and their website design. That began happening when they saw my website and asked me “Can you build me something like that” or “I love your branding, can you help me with mine”

But I've never called myself a business systems expert. I've never put "Web Designer" or "Business Mentor" in my bio. Because who was I to claim those titles?

My brain screams: You're just good at solving problems. You've been running businesses for 30 years, but that doesn't make you a consultant. You're not a ‘Website, graphic designer’ with fancy certifications.

The imposter syndrome has been brutal. But here's what I've finally realised: I've been mentoring and educating business owners for years. I've been solving the problems they hate dealing with. I love being in the background working on all these systems, but I can also be at the front when needed. I adapt to whatever the situation requires.

Some of the best experts are the ones who learned by necessity and experience, not theory.

What Actually Lights Me Up

This is the part of me that  I've been afraid to say out loud: Building business systems is what energises me. Creating websites that actually work and that look beautiful and read like the person they are written for. I love getting to know my clients and following them in everything they do, in social media and just them, I get to know them and that is where the creation comes from. Designing email sequences that feel human. Helping overwhelmed entrepreneurs stop fighting their tech and start using it to grow. But most of all, giving them a brand and a website that sounds like them and feels like them!

I love the moment when someone sees their new website for the first time and says, "This is exactly what I wanted but couldn't explain." One of my clients recently emailed me as soon as I sent her the draft of her home page and it was one simple line “I just almost cried Linda!!!!! In a good way”

I love building systems so intuitive that my clients can actually use them without calling me every week. Although I also love nothing more than keeping our relationship going and having offers that include a monthly retainer for us to work together on whatever you need me for.

I love taking the complex, overwhelming world of online business and making it simple.

This is my zone of genius. The mentoring, the educating, the problem-solving, this is what I want to be known for. Whether I'm working behind the scenes designing your systems or standing at the front teaching you how to use them, this is where my heart is.

Cut the Bullshit Approach

My core philosophy is "Cut the Bullshit." Not because I'm harsh, but because when your business is falling apart and you're drowning in tech overwhelm, you don't need gentle encouragement. You need someone who can look at your situation and say, "Right, here's what's happening, and here's how we fix it."

I understand what it's like to run a business when everything feels chaotic. I know what it's like to be brilliant at what you do but completely lost when it comes to the systems that could help you grow. I've been there.

That's why my clients don't just get websites, they get systems they actually understand and own. No renting your success from platforms you don't control. No monthly fees for things you should own outright. Only your monthly hosting, back-ups and all that goes with that, depending on your set up. And I try to keep it as affordable as possible and I do not make much profit on this part of my business, I have done this with great intention as I know how much running a business costs.

Time to Jump

In a wee while, I'm going to finish writing and change those buttons to pay now. I'm going to update my social media to say "Business Systems Strategist" and "Website Designer" without hiding behind safer job titles.

I'm going to jump.

Not because I'm not scared, but because I'm finally ready to own what I've been doing for 30 years. To stop underselling my experience and claim the expertise I've been building through necessity, survival, and genuine love for the work.

If you're reading this and you're drowning in tech overwhelm, fighting systems you don't understand, trying to build a business with digital duct tape and prayer, I see you. I've been there. I've solved these problems for myself and others for years.

And I'm finally ready to help you build something better.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some buttons to change. Catch ya later!
